The FLOS Chiara Floor Lamp is a 2020 design and a reissue of Mario Bellini's original 1969 icon. The story behind this unique lamp begins when Bellini realises that light can be used in the same way it manifests itself in our environment: never directly, but through reflection on surfaces. The designer took a pair of scissors and a piece of cardboard and began cutting something that could be made into a cylinder with a wide cap. When the left and right sides of the cap were joined together, it would function as a reflector for the cylindrical base. Although the Italian name Chiara means “clear”, the name of the lamp refers to certain dialect expressions in Lombardy for “casting light”, translated into the Italian word “Chiaro”.
Fifty years after the introduction of the original Chiara, FLOS is reissuing the classic in new sizes and finishes. With its large size, the floor lamp is a stunning sight to behold; soft in shape and impressive in presence. The lamp has a reflective profile made of laser-cut stainless steel and is finished on the inside with a white plastic film. The folded surface is closed by hooks formed directly from the sheet metal. A coloured seal made of moulded thermoplastic polyurethane runs along the entire profile of the lamp. The supplied 190-centimetre cord has a dimmer switch that allows you to adjust the light intensity to your liking. The light source is not included.
