For centuries, so-called "complications" have embodied the pinnacle of fine mechanical watchmaking. Among the earliest of these are alarm clocks and calendar movements. Moon phase displays have also been known for several centuries. Chiming movements can be considered the most technically and handcrafted additional functions. However, finishing techniques such as skeletonizing, which is mainly done by hand, also characterize the high art of watchmaking.
