For centuries, so-called "complications" have embodied the pinnacle of fine mechanical watchmaking. Among the earliest of these are alarm clocks and calendar movements. Moon phase displays have also been known for several centuries. Chiming movements can be considered the most technically and handcrafted additional functions. However, finishing techniques such as skeletonizing, which is mainly done by hand, also characterize the high art of watchmaking.

Incidentally, the complication and finishing scale is almost completely open at the top. Experienced watchmakers combine additional functions and refinements at will. This second volume of the Watch Book - More than Time is dedicated to further additional functions of mechanical timepieces, their historical development and technical features.
